FPS was designed for the numerical calculation of the photonic properties of complex systems in 3D where exploitation of periodicity or symmetry is not possible. Approaching these types of problems is possible using a very large number of elements. The core idea is that dipole emitters embedded in photonic environments are modified by that environment. Therefore, we model a photonic structure, discretize it, simulate dipole emitters inside, and calculate the behavior of the dipole over time. By measuring the power output of a dipole over time, and then taking a Fourier transform, the local density of states can be calculated.
